Braunfels Castle is a magnificent castle that allows visitors to feel the breath of the Middle Ages. Standing proudly in the German state of Hesse, this castle is a truly magical place where history and beauty come together. As a castle that still conveys the stories of medieval knights, Braunfels Castle continues to captivate travelers. It is without question one of the most worthwhile castles to visit in Hesse.
The History of Braunfels Castle
Braunfels Castle was first documented in 1246. At that time, it consisted of a residential tower and a three-story wooden defensive gallery. During the Middle Ages, the castle served as a defensive stronghold against the Counts of Nassau-Weilburg. In response, the House of Nassau built Philippsstein Castle in 1390 within visible range.
In the 16th century, the tall Luginsland tower was constructed to adapt to the increased range of heavy firearms. Despite these measures, Braunfels Castle was occupied several times during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) and suffered significant damage.
From the mid-19th century onward, the Braunfels family resumed major building projects, and the castle underwent two large-scale transformations. Through repeated restorations, it took on its present appearance, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements.
Highlights and Atmosphere
Braunfels Castle impresses not only through its architecture but also through its strong historical presence. Its exterior combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, while entering the interior feels like stepping back in time.
