Have you ever noticed that Sundays in Germany feel quieter than usual?

This is due to a tradition called “Ruhetag” (Day of Rest), where Sunday is considered a day to take a break from work and relax. As a result, many shops remain closed, and making loud noises is legally restricted.

For example, mowing the lawn, using a drill for DIY projects, or playing loud music are all considered a no-go. In residential areas, making noise on a Sunday might even prompt a neighbor to give you a warning. Moving house on a Sunday is also generally avoided.

However, thanks to this tradition, many people spend their Sundays peacefully in parks or by lakes, cherishing time with family and friends. If you’re visiting Germany, why not embrace the “quiet Sunday” atmosphere and enjoy a slow, relaxing day?
